Avoid certain foods, especially for the first 48 hours after treatment. Whitening treatments penetrate within the tooth to dissolve stains. During the window of time after the treatment, your teeth are most susceptible to acquiring stains.
AVOID COLORED FOODS
Example: wine, tea, coffee, chocolate, beets, berries, red or dark sauces. If you do consume drinks like tea try using a straw to avoid contact with your teeth. This also includes colored mouth washes especially blue or red.
AVOID ACIDIC FOODS
Example: lemons, limes, soda, pickles, fruit juices, or beer.
AVOID HOT AND COLD FOODS
A whitening procedure can generally make your teeth more sensitive. Only consume hot and cold foods as tolerated.
AVOID TOBACCO USE
If you do need to use tobacco use an e-cigarette limitedly to avoid stains.
FOODS YOU CAN EAT
TIPS TO PREVENTING STAINS:
Brush your teeth immediately after eating foods that could stain.
Use a sensitive toothpaste if you need to so you can continue to brush often.
Follow good dental hygiene including brushing, flossing, and using clear mouthwash.
Professional whitening treatments do not damage your enamel in the way at-home treatments do. If you regularly consume foods that stain your teeth, consider having a touch-up done every 2-3 months.
